Students and residents belonging to AMPATH Consortium institutions are selected each year to train at BUAP in Mexico for rotations of hands-on training and life-changing experience in hospitals and urban/rural clinical sites. While in Mexico, they become part of Puebla’s health community, both in their contribution and in a perspective they can bring back home. Direct hands-on experience are dependent on clinical skills and Spanish proficiency, but all learners gain deeper understanding of health systems, structural and social determinants of health, as well as cultural insights that will also impact their care of patients back home.

The AMPATH Consortium makes it possible for selected BUAP University medical students and residents to study at other AMPATH institutions, including Dell Medical School, for six to eight weeks every year. The students and registrars gain not only medical education, but also an understanding of other healthcare systems and how to apply that knowledge to become medical leaders in Mexico.

In a three-week, non-clinical elective experience based at a Spanish language institute in Puebla, Mexico, medical students, residents, and fellows integrate medical Spanish and cross-cultural awareness into their medical training and practice. Participants reflect on the ways that cultural differences and racial/ethnic disparities contribute to deficiencies in healthcare delivery while improving oral, listening, and written skills in Spanish.

This global-to-local enrichment elective for Dell Med students in Austin combines study and work alongside AMPATH/MAPAS student visitors from Kenya and Mexico. Participants learn alongside their peers about each countries’ health systems, and build supportive and long-standing counterpart relationships.

Third year students in good standing may conduct independent research or other projects in Puebla, under the supervision of faculty from their home institution and BUAP, and alongside a BUAP student counterpart.

Supported by a Global Virtual Exchange pilot grant from Texas Global at UT Austin, this collaborative fall semester course is jointly attended by Dell Med students and BUAP medical students. Co-taught by Dell Med and BUAP faculty, the course examines challenges in migrant health and applications for Texas and Puebla.

In monthly virtual presentations led jointly by UT Austin and BUAP, cross-institutional pairs of experts dive deep on topics of interest identified in the 2019 Puebla community health needs assessment, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and more. These bilingual seminars are attended live by both the medical community and health governance entities, with past recordings available on our Events page. Coming soon, this center will allow medical students and health professionals in training to develop skills in practice as well as collaborate with simulation programs in Austin at Dell Med and local hospitals.
